How To: Shoot at Range (Ballistics & Zeroing)

Bullets drop and take time to arrive. Zeroing is the control that fixes it, and most players never touch it.

Why your shots miss high or low for no reason

WARDOGS models real ballistics: bullets drop over distance, and they take time to travel. A rifle that feels laser-accurate at 50 m will feel broken at 250 m, and nothing is wrong with the rifle.

Two things are happening:

  • Drop. The round falls as it flies. At range you must aim above where you want to hit — unless your sight is zeroed for that distance, which is what zeroing is for.
  • Travel time. The round arrives late. Against a moving target you must aim where they will be, not where they are. At 715 m/s — the muzzle velocity of the 5.56 rifles — a target 300 m away has most of half a second to move after you fire.

Zeroing: the control nobody uses

Page Up and Page Down adjust your zero. Your current zero range is shown at the bottom right of the screen. Most weapons default to 100 m.

That default is the problem. If you're set to 100 m and shooting at 300 m, your rounds land low, and it looks like recoil or bad aim.

How to use it

  1. Estimate the range. Use a Rangefinder ($400) if you have one — it removes the guesswork entirely. Binoculars ($75) help you spot but don't measure.
  2. Set your zero to match with Page Up / Page Down before you take the shot.
  3. Aim centre mass and fire. With a correct zero you should not need to hold over.
  4. Adjust between engagements, not during one. Set your zero for the range band you expect to be fighting at when you take up a position.

A practical habit

Set your zero when you choose your position, not when you see a target. Holding a long lane across a valley? Zero for that lane's distance the moment you settle in. Moving into buildings? Drop back to 100 m. The players who never touch zeroing are the ones fumbling Page Up while someone crosses their sights.

Optics and zeroing range

Optics carry their own zeroing ranges, and this matters more than magnification when you're buying:

A 4× scope with 100–400 m zeroing is a genuinely different tool from a fixed 1.2× reflex — not just more zoom, but the ability to correct for distance. See Attachments for prices and the full list.

What upgrading your rifle actually buys

This surprises people: damage is a property of the calibre, not the gun. 5.56×45mm deals 28 damage whether it leaves a free Bushmaster M17S or a $2,800 M4. A free rifle kills an unarmoured target in the same number of body shots as an expensive one.

What you get for the money is:

  • Fire modes — the three free rifles are semi-auto and burst only, with no full auto. This is the single biggest reason to upgrade.
  • Accuracy (MOA), which matters precisely at the ranges this guide is about
  • Muzzle velocity — a faster round drops less and arrives sooner, so less lead and less holdover
  • Handling and attachment options

So if you're missing at range, a more expensive rifle in the same calibre may not fix it. Zeroing, a rangefinder, and a magnified optic will.

Common mistakes

  • Never touching zeroing and blaming the gun.
  • Guessing range instead of buying the $400 Rangefinder — cheap, and it converts guesswork into a number.
  • Buying magnification without checking its zeroing range.
  • Aiming directly at a moving target at distance instead of leading it.
